Mumbai's Seven Lakes Hold 94.29% Water Stock as Monsoon Reservoir Levels Stay High

Mumbai’s seven lakes hold 94.29% of their live storage capacity, with Vihar, Tulsi and Modak Sagar full. Reservoir rainfall continues, while Upper Vaitarna remains the lowest-filled lake at 87.13%.

Mumbai’s seven lakes, which supply drinking water to the city, collectively held 13,64,737 million litres of water, or 94.29 per cent of their total live storage capacity, as of 6 am on Thursday, August 20, according to the Hydraulic Engineer's Department at the Bhandup Master Control Centre.

The current water stock is lower than the same period last year, when the reservoirs contained 13,76,703 million litres, or 95.12 per cent of their total live storage capacity. However, the levels remain higher than in 2024, when the lakes held 13,53,602 million litres, accounting for 93.52 per cent of the total live storage.

Among the seven reservoirs, Vihar, Tulsi and Modak Sagar remained at 100 per cent live storage. Tansa stood at 98.69 per cent, while Middle Vaitarna was at 94.22 per cent. Bhatsa, the city’s largest reservoir, was at 94.38 per cent, while Upper Vaitarna remained the lowest-filled lake at 87.13 per cent.

Upper Vaitarna held 1,97,833 million litres, accounting for 87.13 per cent of its capacity. Modak Sagar held 1,28,925 million litres at 100 per cent, while Tansa contained 1,43,181 million litres at 98.69 per cent. Middle Vaitarna held 1,82,348 million litres at 94.22 per cent, and Bhatsa held 6,76,706 million litres at 94.38 per cent. Vehar contained 27,698 million litres and Tulsi held 8,046 million litres, with both reservoirs at 100 per cent.

Light showers continued across the lake catchment areas over the past 24 hours, with Upper Vaitarna recording the highest rainfall at 13 mm. Modak Sagar received 3 mm, Middle Vaitarna 4 mm, Tulsi 3 mm, Tansa 0 mm, Bhatsa 4 mm and Vehar 7 mm.

The Bhandup Complex also recorded significant rainfall during the last 24 hours, taking its cumulative seasonal rainfall to 2,664 mm.

The cumulative rainfall recorded at the reservoirs during the monsoon so far stood at 3,504 mm at Upper Vaitarna, 2,939 mm at Modak Sagar, 2,676 mm at Tansa, 2,604 mm at Middle Vaitarna, 2,443 mm at Bhatsa, 3,396 mm at Tulsi and 2,472 mm at Vehar.

The report stated that Vihar Lake has been overflowing since July 7. However, the capacity of Tansa Dam has decreased after it had been overflowing till Saturday. The water level of Modak Sagar Dam also decreased marginally on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Middle Vaitarna WSCPO gate remains closed, while the release of water from Upper Vaitarna has remained suspended since July 6, according to the Hydraulic Engineer's Department. With the seven reservoirs collectively holding 94.29 per cent of their live storage capacity, Mumbai’s key water sources continue to remain at high levels during the ongoing monsoon.
